Property Committee plans Steeple Repairs

Sometime this past winter, the roof on the Church steeple was damaged by high winds.  Several shingles are raised up, as can be seen by the picture at the right.  The most noticeable damaged shingles are about six courses up, to the right of center.  This is the side of the steeple that is visible as one comes up Lewis Street from Beverley.

The Property Committee has contacted our insurance carrier and four painting and four repair contractors about fixing this damage.  Since this project will require a crane as well as Dominion Power to cover the power lines near the steeple, the Property Committee is also planning to do some additional work while a contractor is up that high.  The shingle roof will be repainted as it is repaired.  It was last painted well over ten years ago.  In addition, all of the wood trim around the windows from the start of the main Sanctuary roof line will be painted, as well as possibly the "peak" towards at the top of the Sanctuary roof.  (This latter area is that which was too high to do during this past spring's work day.)

The Property Committee is still waiting to get bids from one or two contractors.  Hopefully, the work can be started once the hot summer weather is past.  When the work commences, the crane will be placed in the Methodist Church parking lot, and will reach over Frederick Street to the steeple.  Because of this arrangement, Frederick Street in front of the church will have to be closed while the work is being completed.
