LOCAL CAUSES
Weekday Religious Education Second supports the Beverley Manor chapter of WRE, which provides religious education classses for elementary students in Staunton area schools.
Valley Mission Valley Mission provides immediate temporary housing for the homeless, providing not only material needs but also for spiritual needs.  Meals are provided three times a day for anyone who is hungry.  Assistance is offered to those in the community needing help with food, clothing, employment assistance, household items and medications.  Valley Mission is located at 1513 West Beverley Street in Staunton.
SACRA The Staunton Augusta Church Relief Association (126 North New Street) dispenses emergency relief in the form of food and financial assistance for medication, utilities, rent or other basic needs.  SACRA is open  Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.  We support SACRA both from our general mission budget and with the monthly hunger offering.
Pregnancy Help Center The Prgnancy Help Center provides counseling and support on alternatives to abortion.  The Center maintains facilities in both Staunton and Waynesboro.
Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels operates five days a week out of the Memorial Baptist Church.  Two meals for each day are delivered prior to lunch.  Several members of Second Church have served as drivers for Meals on Wheels.  Drivers usually deliver to 5-6 persons each day.
Augusta Free Medical Clinic  The Clinic provides general medical treatment for non-emergency health problems, including dispensing medicines on an "as available" basis.  The Clinic serves residents of Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro who have no other access to health care, and are younger than 65 (when Medicare would take over).  The Clinic recently moved into its new facility on Mule Academy Road in Fishersville, behind the Augusta Medical Center.
Habitat for Humanity Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Habitat for humanity seeks to provide good, affordable housing for qualified families in our area.  In recent years, S.A.W. HfH has been building in a development in the Johnson Street area of Staunton.  Houses are also being built in Waynesboro and Augusta County.  S.A.W.'s offices are on West Beverley Street in Staunton, beside Valley Mission.
Blue Ridge Area Food Bank The Food Bank serves Staunton, Harrisonburg, Waynesboro, Lexington, Buena Vista, and the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, and Rockingham.   The Food Bank's mission is to feed the hungry and reduce food waste.  As a clearinghouse, the Food Bank solicits, collects, and distributes food to qualified churches and 501 (c) (3) non profit organizations.  These agencies provide meals or supplemental and emergency food boxes free to the needy.  The Food Bank is located in Verona.
Discretionary Fund This fund is used for non-budgeted, immediate needs, as determined by either the Mission Committee or the pastor.

PRESBYTERIAN-RELATED CAUSES
Undesignated Benevolences Second Church provide financial support for the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) carried out by Shenandoah Presbytery, the Synod of the Mid Atlantic, and the General Assembly.  The largest portion of our contributions supports the presbytery, with smaller amounts going to General Assembly and the synod.
Per Capita Apportionment Per capita is a contribution based on the number of our active members, and supports the necessary expenses for the operation of our partner governing bodies mentioned above.
Presbyterian Hunger Program 41% of our 4-cents per meal hunger offerings support the work of this hunger program.  Funds are divided between programs administered by Shenandoah Presbytery and the General Assembly.
Missionary Support Second Church provides annual designated mission support for Brian Gilchrest, a member of the Windy Cove Church.  Brian serves as a missionary in Mettu, Ethiopia.
Ethiopia Support Support for the partnership agreement between Shenandoah Presbytery and the Illubabor Bethel Synod in Ethiopia.  For more information, see the Partnership web site.
Gore Children's Home Second provides support for one child at this home in Mettu, Ethiopia, where Brian Gilchrest serves.
Haiti Project Second supports a presbytery-related project in Haiti, that helps provide for basic needs in this very poor country.  Members of Shenandoah Presbytery (including some Second Church folks) regularly visit Haiti to see the progress of this project and offer assistance.
Medical Benevolence Foundation The Medical Benevolence Foundation is an arm of the International Health Ministries of the Presbyterian Church (USA), providing support for medical personnel, as well as equipment, supplies and financial aid to hospitals, medical outposts and clinics outside the United States.

Water for Life  13% of our hunger offering support this ministry that works to provide safe water in developing countries.
Heifer Project 13% of our hunger offerings supports the work of Heifer Project International.  Heifer animals (and training in their care) offer hungry families around the world a way to feed themselves and become self-reliant.

SPECIAL OFFERINGS
One Great Hour of Sharing Received on Easter Sunday each year.  Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives, and work together to strengthen their families and communities.  Presbyterian Disaster Assistance receives 36 percent of undesignated One Great Hour of Sharing gifts, while Self-Development of People and the Presbyterian Hunger Program each receives 32 percent.
Pentecost Offering Received on Pentecost Sunday each year.  The Pentecost Offering represents a call to mission with children at risk and a celebration of ministries with youth and young adults.  For 2002 the offering allocations are:
        · 40% is to retained by Second Church and used to support ministries with children at risk, by direction of the Session.
        · 10% goes to General Assembly for child advocacy
        · 50% goes to General Assembly for ministries with youth and young adults
Mother's Day Offering Supports the ministries of Sunnyside Retirement Communities at Massenetta near Harrisonburg, and Summit Square in Waynesboro.
Thanksgiving Offering Supports seven children's ministries within the Synod of the Mid Atlantic, such as the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands in Wytheville, VA, and the Barium Springs Children's Home in NC..
Christmas Joy Offering Received each year at a Wednesday evening Church Night program and on the Fourth Sunday in Advent.  Presbyterians have long celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ by giving generously to a Christmas season offering. Fifty percent of the receipts to the Christmas Joy Offering are distributed to the Board of Pensions for assistance programs that provide support to retired and active church workers and their spouses and families. The other fifty percent supports the eight Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges through the National Ministries Division of the General Assembly Council.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance In addition to support generated by the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, Second periodically supports emergency needs due to natural disasters or other urgent concerns, such as the church's response to the events of 9/11/01.
